Why your progress keeps resetting

Progress or Slippage?

Gil Winkleman ND, MA

Hi Reader,

How many times have you made genuine progress and then watched it slip back?

You sleep better for two weeks. Then the insomnia returns. You handle stress well for a month. Then the same trigger takes over. You finally feel momentum with your health, your relationships, or the habits you have been trying to change. Then your body or your behavior drops back to where it started.

After enough cycles, people stop trusting their own progress. They begin expecting the collapse before it happens.

When you see what is actually driving the repetition, the pattern becomes predictable. And predictable means workable.

Many approaches improve symptoms without fully addressing the conditions that keep the pattern returning. The anxiety decreases. Sleep improves. Energy returns briefly. But the nervous system still defaults back to the same stress response under pressure. Which is why the pattern comes back right when you need stability most.

After two decades working with chronic illness, nervous system dysregulation, and behavioral patterns, the most consistent thing I see is this: people arrive already carrying an accurate picture of what has not worked. My job is not always to hand you answers. It is to help you read what you are already holding. In practice that means identifying where your pattern is running from and showing you where to work first.

Here is what that looks like in practice.

Over the past several months I recorded a seven-episode podcast series that lays out why progress resets and why the nervous system repeats familiar responses under stress even when you understand them. One episode explains why insight often fails to change behavior under pressure. Another breaks down why healing itself becomes exhausting for some people. Each episode is designed to help you recognize your own pattern more clearly, not to tell you what your pattern is. You can find the full series here: askdrgil.com/podcast

That series points toward several new clinical offerings, each addressing a different layer of the same underlying pattern. I will walk through each one over the coming weeks.

The best place to start right now is the quiz.

It is 14 to 20 questions and takes most people a few minutes. It shows which of five healing archetypes best matches how your system responds under stress right now, whether that shows up physically, psychologically, or in your patterns and relationships. See whether you recognize yourself in your result.

Next week I will show you why stabilization has to happen before deeper work holds. Most people reverse the order. That is why progress does not hold.

More soon.
